College Application Coaching — Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're a parent or family member researching college consulting options or a student wondering where to start, you've come to the right place! Here are answers to the questions we at Gramma's Jam get asked most often.
All About College Essay Coaching
Q: What does a college essay coach do?
A: A college essay coach works one-on-one with students to help them identify, develop, and write their most compelling college application essays. This includes providing support in brainstorming, outlining, and revising summer program application essays, Common App essays, UC personal insight questions, supplemental essays, scholarship essays, and activity list descriptions. A good coach never writes an essay for the student — they ask the right questions to draw out the student's authentic voice and story, then guide the writing and revision process from start to finish.
Q: Is hiring a college essay coach worth it?
A: For most students, yes — especially for those applying to selective colleges where the written elements of the application carry significant weight. Admissions officers read thousands of essays every cycle. A coach helps students craft essays that are genuinely insightful for the reader and focus on that which makes them unique. Students who work with Gramma's Jam have been accepted to Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Rice, UCLA, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, NYU Stern, and many more.
Q: How is a college essay coach different from a college counselor?
A: A college counselor typically helps with the full scope of the college application process — college list building, application strategy, timelines, financial aid, and essays. A college essay coach focuses specifically on the written elements: summer program application essays, personal statements, supplemental essays, UC PIQs, scholarship essays, and activity lists. We at Gramma's Jam do both — we help students build effective college application lists and navigate the entire college apps process, with a particular specialty in the written components.
Q: When should my student start working with a college essay coach?
A: Ideally, rising seniors should begin in the spring of junior year or early summer before senior year. This allows enough time for necessary brainstorming, multiple drafts, and thoughtful revision without the pressure of looming deadlines. That said, we also work with students who require support later in the process — even students in the thick of application season. It's never too late to get help. Sophomores and juniors interested in summer program applications can also benefit from starting early.
Q: Can a college essay coach help with more than just the personal statement?
A: Absolutely. We help students with every written component of the college application, including the Common App personal statement, UC personal insight questions (PIQs), school-specific supplemental essays, scholarship essays, the Common App activity list, UC activity list descriptions, and resumes for college applications.
Working With Gramma's Jam
Q: Who do we work with?
A: We work with a wide range of students virtually via Zoom, including high school sophomores and juniors applying to summer programs, rising seniors applying to four-year colleges and universities, community college students applying to transfer to four-year schools, and students applying to graduate school programs. He works with students throughout the United States and internationally.
Q: Does Gramma's Jam write the essays for students?
A: No — and that's by design. We coach, not ghostwrite, asking the questions that help students uncover their most authentic stories, guide the structure and strategy of each essay, and provide detailed feedback on drafts. The voice, ideas, and words always belong to the student. This approach not only produces better essays — it helps students develop writing and self-reflection skills that serve them for life.
Q: Is college essay coaching done in person or online?
A: All of our sessions are conducted virtually via Zoom, which means we can work with students anywhere in the US and internationally.
Q: How many sessions does a student typically need?
A: It varies depending on the student's needs, timeline, and application list. Some students need help with just one essay; others work with Gramma's Jam throughout the entire application season. Feel free to reach out to us to discuss your specific needs.
College Essays And The Application Process
Q: What makes a great college personal statement?
A: The best personal statements are specific, honest, and surprising. They don't try to impress — they reveal. Admissions officers aren't looking for a resume in essay form or a list of accomplishments. They want to understand who the student is, how they think, and what they are about beyond the transcripts, standardized test scores, and extracurricular activities.
Q: What are the UC personal insight questions (PIQs)?
A: The UC personal insight questions are the essay prompts used by all nine University of California campuses (UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Merced). Applicants choose four of eight prompts and write responses of up to 350 words each. The PIQs differ from the Common App personal statement and require a separate strategy. We specialize in helping students select the appropriate four prompts and craft responses that work together to simultaneously illustrate a singular passion and a well-rounded personality.

Q: How important are supplemental essays in college admissions?
A: In two words: extremely important, especially at selective schools. Supplemental essays are school-specific prompts that ask students why they want to attend that particular school, what they'll contribute to the community, or to elaborate on aspects of their background and interests. A weak or generic supplemental essay can hurt an otherwise strong application. A compelling one can tip the scales in an applicants favor. We support students in crafting supplements that are specific, genuine, and tailored to each school — not simply recycled versions of the same essay.
Q: What should students write about for their college essay?
A: "It ain't whatcha write, it's the way 'atcha write it!"
- Jack Kerouac
It’s not the actual topic that should concern students most, but rather how they write about it. We support students in crafting essays that maintain their unique voice while capturing the aspects of their story that set it apart.
Q: Can a college essay coach help transfer students?
A: Yes. We work with community college students and four-year transfer applicants. Transfer applications have distinct essay requirements — including the UC Transfer Personal Insight Questions and school-specific transfer supplements — and the strategy differs significantly from that for first-year applications. We are experienced in guiding transfer students through the unique challenges and opportunities of the transfer essay process.

A: Yes. We work with students applying to graduate and professional school programs, helping them craft personal statements and statements of purpose that clearly articulate their academic background, research interests, professional goals, and why they're a strong fit for their target programs. Graduate school personal statements require a very different approach than undergraduate essays, and we tailor our coaching accordingly.
